October showcases the Klein Karoo at its most vibrant, and Oudtshoorn parkrun, held at the scenic Surval Boutique Olive Estate, provides an ideal way to engage with the area’s natural beauty. This weekly event, cherished by locals and visitors alike, celebrates health, community, and the unique landscapes of the Karoo.
Launched on April 18, 2015, as the first “O” venue in South Africa, Oudtshoorn parkrun began with 84 participants and 15 volunteers. Since then, it has experienced growing attendance, peaking at 163 runners and walkers. Even through challenges—such as a notably cold, rainy day with just four participants—the event has thrived due to a committed team of volunteers dedicated to fostering community well-being.
Set against the backdrop of the Swartberg Mountains, the course meanders through gravel farm roads, olive groves, and two dam walls. Gentle hills near the end add to the scenic and satisfying experience, blending fitness with the tranquil beauty of the region.
Since its inception, Oudtshoorn parkrun has welcomed a wide range of participants, from seasoned athletes to families enjoying a lively weekend activity. Beyond fitness, it has fostered strong community bonds, with participants often gathering afterward for breakfast at Surval’s restaurant. These gatherings have led to lifelong friendships and a supportive network that extends beyond the parkrun itself.
Oudtshoorn parkrun has celebrated various milestones over the years, including record-breaking attendances and community-focused initiatives. Special gatherings for holidays and awareness days further strengthen the ties within the community, embedding the parkrun into local culture.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the event faced suspension but maintained community connections through virtual runs and challenges. This resilience highlights the dedication of the Oudtshoorn parkrun community, which has grown stronger and more inclusive over time.
Today, Oudtshoorn parkrun continues to attract enthusiastic participants, working to reach broader groups, including youth and underrepresented communities. More than just a run, Oudtshoorn parkrun represents community, health, and resilience, underscoring the power of inclusivity and support in promoting well-being. For those visiting the area, Oudtshoorn parkrun offers a warm welcome and an inspiring experience in one of the Karoo’s most captivating months.
