Background to the Oudtshoorn Sport Initiative
Oudtshoorn’s natural beauty, good weather, easy accessibility, sporting infrastructure and range of affordable accommodation has over the years resulted in it being a choice destination for numerous sporting events.
The Oudtshoorn Municipality has in the past been the sole role player in the maintenance and expansion of our town’s sporting infrastructure. In the recent past the municipal budget for maintaining and expanding its sporting facilities has been placed under increasing pressure due to the increased demands for financial support. The decreased budget has affected the maintenance of sport facilities resulting in missed opportunities to host sporting events and the associated economic injection into our town. Noticing this worrying trend, stakeholders from the private sector acknowledged that addressing the infrastructure challenge would require them to take greater ownership OF the maintenance of Oudtshoorn’s facilities. The Oudtshoorn Sporting Initiative (OSI) was formed around this goal.
Aim of the Oudtshoorn Sport Initiative
- Promote Oudtshoorn as a preferred destination for sporting events
- Support initiatives to maintain and upgrade sporting facilities
- Build relationships and improve communication between all role players in the Greater Oudtshoorn sporting landscape, especially with the Municipality, Eden Sport Council, Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS), Local Sport Clubs and Non-Government Organisations
- Build and maintain a website where relevant information is available i.e. calendar of sporting events, databases of sports facilities, clubs and contact persons
- Promote sport tourism in the Greater Oudtshoorn Area
- Register the OSI as a Non-Profit Organisation with a constitution aligned with the above principles
